Couples & Individuals

Valerie Crawford, Ph.D.

Dr. Crawford, a clinical psychologist, specializes in relationships and works with both couples and individuals. She uses evidenced-based therapeutic approaches and has expertise in the science of adult romantic relationships. (Yes, there is a science of adult romantic relationships.)

COUPLE THERAPY
I help you build closeness and security in your relationship; resolve conflict and communication problems; be ready to take on anything together as team; heal relationship injuries;  share your emotional truth with each other; and feel heard, seen and loved.
INDIVIDUAL THERAPY
I treat depression, anxiety, and self-esteem problems. I help you change negative relationship patterns, heal the repercussions of traumatic experiences, strengthen boundaries, express your feelings in an effective and clear way, make life decisions, and navigate transitions.
EMDR
I use EMDR to resolve trauma and build resilience. EMDR is a rapid, dynamic therapeutic method for resolving symptoms related to trauma and anxiety, increasing resilience, and improving presence and performance.
VIDEO THERAPY
I am convinced that video-conference therapy is just as effective and deep as in-person therapy. I have worked with couples and individuals over video for many years and know people can do deep work and make lasting change. I work with people anywhere in California using Zoom, a HIPAA-compliant video conferencing platform.

How I can help you

Individual Therapy

Whether you are anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, lonely, self-critical, stuck in recurring patterns, feeling lost, numb, out of control, or experiencing the impacts of trauma and wounds, old or new, I work with you collaboratively to gain a sense of control in your life, to heal, to gain clarity, to make changes, to find your true self, and to build confidence that you can step creatively courageously into your own life. Build self-efficacy and-self advocacy and a sense of connection and integration within!

Therapy with me is a supportive, collaborative, nurturing and nonjudgmental healing partnership that enables you to make change happen in your life, in your relationships, in your self. Therapy means finding and connecting with your inner vitality, your emotions, and your inner compass. This involves more than just talk. Change and healing involve working together to figure out the blocks, resolving them by tapping in to your innate self-righting capacities, so you can have the relationships you want -- and thrive.

So many reasons to do therapy:  Maybe you want to create something new in your life. Let go of what's holding you back. Strengthen bonds. Tap into your personal power. Overcome depression or anxiety. Explore and connect with your emotional truth. Heal wounds. Set boundaries. Live like you mean it. Be different. Be more yourself. Be more creative. Find balance. Feel better. Feel whole.  Let's do it.

Couple Therapy

You can have the close, nurturing relationship you long for! Working together, I can help the two of you build a foundation of security and closeness and create vitality and resilience in your partnership.

The science of adult attachment has revealed the roots of relationship distress and relationship security, and shows us there is a path to a secure, close, trusting relationship. And I have the map. I can help you and your partner get there. Let's go!

In couple therapy, I am an engaged and supportive guide. I actively help you and your partner get to the roots of your recurring patterns of conflict and unproductive communication. I will help the two of you tap in to your deeper emotions and longings and speak those to each other in a way that builds your trust and closeness with each other.  Maybe you have some relationship injuries that you need to heal together. Or perhaps trust has been violated through betrayal or addiction. Your relationship can recover. Indeed repairing wounds often is the gateway to a relationship that is revitalized and stronger than before.

In addition to resolving communication issues and conflict, I work with couples to address issues such as affairs, co-parenting issues, extended family issues, relationship stressors, and sex and intimacy issues.

I believe that couple therapy can be one of the most transformative and enriching experiences in adult life and love and a deeply powerful context for individual growth and healing.
